Elgin by Motorhome

Elgin

Elgin is a busy market town in comparison to the smaller towns nearby.
The high street has several 19th century buildings.
The town still retains older buildings dating from the 13th century.
Elgin Castle once stood on Lady Hill but little remains of it today.
More prominent is the Duke of Gordon Monument on the same hill.
Lady Hill is worth the climb for a good panoramic view of Elgin.

Elgin Cathedral

Elgin Cathedral was built in the closing years of the 13th century.
Many people hold it be the most beautiful cathedral in Scotland.
The cathedral was burnt to the ground in 1390.
By Alexander Earl of Buchan the notorious Wolf of Badenoch.

The Motorhomers were in Elgin. The lads were in the bar. The lassies were elsewhere in the town checking on the price of fish. The barman was in conversation with two local farmers. They were discussing the culling of hedgehogs, badgers and such pests;

‘Badgers! Badgers! Badgers!’ the barman, with a pained expression on his face was saying.
‘Is that a’ that you lot can talk aboot, badgers, bliddy badgers’ he said.
Wait until ye’ve goat piles, bliddy piles, then ye’ll have somethin’ tae talk aboot’ he said.

Josie could contain himself no longer and entered into the conversation;

‘It’s thae bliddy moles that bother me. I cannae get rid o’ them’ he said.

‘Aw, naw, that’s a’ that I need, moles, bliddy moles’ said the barman.
‘I’ll tell ye how tae get rid o’ moles’ he said. ‘I got rid o’ mine.’

‘How did ye dae it?’ asked Josie.

‘I goat a wee tin o’ salmon’ he said, ‘moles love salmon.’

Francie could contain himself no longer and entered into the conversation;

‘A wee tin o’ salmon’ he said, Josie wants rid o’ them, he disnae want tae feed them up.’

‘I opened the tin an’ drained aff the brine’ the barman said.
‘I replaced the brine wi’ diesel oil, an’ left it next tae their molehills’ he said.
‘The next mornin’ I jist walked aroon’ an’ picked them all up’ he said.

‘An’ were they deid’ Francie asked.

‘Naw, ye wee eejit, they had jist run oot o’ diesel’ said the laughing barman.

‘Come oan, Francie, drink up, I think we’re oot o’ oor depth here’ said Josie.
