A story is attached to the most famous piece of carving in the Chapel. The Apprentice Pillar

The master mason had wanted to improve his own knowledge of the craft
And so he travelled to Rome to study alongside the master stonemasons
While he was away his apprentice had a dream
He dreamed that he had completed the carving of the Pillar
On awakening he set to work and completed his ‘Masterpiece’

The master mason arrived home to find that the Pillar had been completed
Amazed at what the boy had done, such skill and dedication
He crowned the lad cruelly with his mason’s leaden mallet
Thereby chiseling the boy out of his childhood’s achievement
