Take the lift in York by Motorhome

Whitby Abbey

Motorhomers may enjoy the atmosphere surrounding the old Abbey

York Minster

‘The central tower is the highest point of the Minster. It stands 180 feet tall and there are 275 steep steps. Visitors may climb the spiral stairway for an unrivalled view. Older visitors may prefer to take advantage of the lift. Beside the stairwell is a sign which reads ‘Quasi.’ This is Latin for ‘Lift’ pull the bell-cord alongside. Before you do this check your watch that it’s not close to dinner. The Minster bell will peal loudly. You’ll hear your lift coming with the shuffling of sandals on the cobbled corridors. An angry old monk in a habit will arrive huffing and puffing. Be careful with your words, he can’t speak English but he can lip-read. Oh no! You’ve pulled the damn cord.’

DONG! DONG! DONG!

‘Here he comes.’

“Les cloches, les cloches, les cloches!Savez-vous quelle heure il est ? Je suis au dîner. Descendez de mon revers, vous l’idiot!”

Which roughly means:

‘Blinkin’ bells, blinkin’ bells, blinkin’ bells. Dae ye know whit time it is? I wis at my blinkin’ breakfast. Get aff my back, ye eejit.’
