Dunfermline Abbey
1643: This was a great witch catching and witch burning year in Dunfermline
Old shrivelled up women with woe begone countenances were rounded up
If any of them had a limp used a walking stick or needed zimmer frames
So much the better for the catchers
Their only means of escape was by broomstick
During the months of May July and August
No less than six women were burnt for being reputed witches
I would suggest that older Motorhomers should visit in June
Two Glasgow men were discussing the affair of the witches;
‘Josie, surely a’ these wimmin werenae witches?’
‘Francie, whit wid ye dae withoot my further education?
Ye see it wisnae much mair different in thae days
They had tae go in front o’ a panel o’ witch doacters
The doacters had tae decide which witch wis a witch and which witch wisnae
Some witches tried screamin’ the hoose doon but that didnae help
Others claimed that they werenae members o’ the Broomstick Club
But it wis found that they had branches everywhere
Aye, Francie, I’m afraid the heid bummer in thae days wis an ignoramus’
‘Josie, whits an ignoramus?’
‘Francie, gie me peace, I’m no’ the fountain o’ a’ yer knowledge, ye know’
‘Sure, Josie, sure, Josie’
Perhaps you would enjoy reading the adventures of Francie and Josie.
